I agree. I always cringe when Viva gets Heather Mills to promote them - she has a reputation of being a bit batty, a distorter of truth and publicity seeker rolled into one. Whether any of those are true or not, I don't know. But that is the general public's perception of her.
I think celebrities "can" raise awareness about an issue for instance Joanna Lumly (sp) with the Gurkas (sp). However I think they need to be issues that already resonate with people in someway to make a big initial effect. They can act as a bridge into new subjects but thier impact isn't as great and you also have the problem that people newly exposed to veganism may associate it with that celebrities personal view on veganism (which may not always be correct) and the celebrities perception by the public (a good example is Heather Mills who seems to be dispised over here). I think its much better to get people involved on a smaller more personal scale with actual people who can talk to them and show the normal face of veganism/animal rights which is just normal people.
The problem presented by the celebs mentioned, is one of consistency, or lack there of. Your post suggests we should not support these contradictions, and I would agree. But perhaps we are putting to much on ALL people to expect more.
